Brief description:
For the academic year 2022-2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) offers grants to foreign citizens not residing in Italy (IRE)* in order to foster international cultural, scientific, and technological cooperation, promote Italian language and culture, and support Italy’s economic system in the world (according to Law 288/55 and its subsequent changes and additions).
Grants are available to pursue study, training, and/or research programs at both public and legally authorized Italian Higher Education Institutes.

Master’s degree (Laurea Magistrale 2° Ciclo), AFAM (Arts, Music, and Dance) courses, Ph.D. program, research under academic supervision (Progetti in co-tutela), and Italian language and culture courses are all eligible.

Scholarship value/duration:
Fees for tuition
Depending on the regulation of each university, grantees may be excluded from paying enrollment and tuition fees. Courses in the Italian language and culture, for which enrollment fees are payable, are not exempt.
Medical and Health Insurance
For the period of the project, grantees will be covered by MAECI-contracted health and medical/accident insurance. Events resulting from pre-existing physical and pathological problems will not be covered by insurance.
Financial Grant
Grantees will be paid a 900 Euro monthly stipend on a quarterly basis, which will be deposited into their Italian bank account.
Depending on the sort of education, the scholarship can last six or nine months. Only applicants who demonstrate adequate academic improvement are given renewals.
Academic requirements are required for eligibility.
Foreign students not residing in Italy and Italian nationals living abroad (IRE)* with a sufficient academic qualification required to enroll in an Italian university/institute must submit applications. For more information, click this link.
There are age restrictions.
With the exception of renewals, applicants for Master’s Degree/Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) Programs/Italian Language and Culture Courses should not be more than 28 years old and 364 days before the deadline.
With the exception of renewals, applicants for Ph.D. programs should not be older than 30 years and 364 days before the deadline.
Applicants for Research Projects under Academic Supervision must be under 40 years old and have lived in the United States for at least 364 days by the deadline.
Language skills and proficiency
Applicants must provide a certificate of Italian language proficiency in order to enroll in an Italian-taught course. B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is the minimum requirement (CEFR). Candidates who have taken an Italian-taught course at the University may submit a language certification from a University department’s language teacher.
Applicants must produce a language certificate proving their English language competency in order to enroll in an English-taught course. B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is the minimum requirement (CEFR). Candidates from countries where English is an official language and who are applying for courses taught fully in English may be approved with a self-certification. For courses exclusively taught in English, proof of Italian fluency is not required.
Applicants for Italian language & culture courses must submit a certificate of fluency in the Italian language (this step is very crucial). The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level A2 is the minimal requirement.
There is no requirement for proof of language proficiency for Ph.D. programs and research projects under academic supervision.
